Know The Difference

Many people don't fully understand the balance of powers that play a huge hand in our lifes. Many feel unable to control it because they think,

"You can't control everything.  Some things just happen"

Which is true

Others believe everything is left is our hands and we must choose to make the best of it or it will best us every time.

That is also true

So where's the balance? Balance is, in my opinion, will always be the most consistent thing we have to opportunity to make and keep in our life. The truth is , fate and destiny are the two ends of which they themselves reside in delicate balance and they balance on your choices

In other words;  everything always and will always come down to the choices you make with the hand that you've been dealt. (For your card players and gamblers out there)

Often times you'll feel powerless. A victim of circumstances beyond all your control, and in that state of mind you often migrate to the emotional ways of thinking, but please remember this

"Emotion isn't a thought, it's a feeling."

As this crescendos with the pile up of adversity;  all rational thought goes completely out of play and it tends to lead to a metaphorical downward spiral

Or a nervous breakdown and irrational thoughts because,  again, emotion is not a thought, it's a feeling.

And on the flip side, we ignore destiny and make fate of everything of our situations. We choose a direction;  yet without an open mind to destiny or faith in it; we choose another path out of our destiny due to impatience and lack of faith in it.

You'll hear a lot of, " it wasn't going to work anyways" to justify their impatience but you cannot base decisions off impatience because, again, that's an emotion not a thought.

If anything else, remember this,

Fate and Destiny exists whether you choose (keyword choose) to agree with it or not. Everything isn't meant to work as well as it is meant to work because no matter what; everything happens for a reason. There's a reason why you're here. There's a reason why you're in the situation that you're currently in right now but there is NO reason why you can't change it if you want to.

Just as you can choose to make your life better you can choose to make it worse.

" Balance be the key to all happiness that you bring in your life. Your intuition be your lighthouse to guide you righteously "

The Three P's of All Ailments.

Due to a conversation I had while photographing a woman in the Oil & Gas industry;  a light bulb went off as a spark of conversation turned to a inspiration piece from mere chit-chat.

All of the ailments in our life are caused of many sources, be it natural or unnatural; yet the solution of the problem, unsurprisingly, all come from many sources. Most unnatural,  and few natural.

The Pill

The Patch

The Problem

The Pill

The quintessential piece of all Western medicine and mainstream propaganda.  The quick fix that all seek, young and old. It is this that the majority of people all live and die by. It is , for the most part, the snake oil of men.

Some so quick to down pills for everything; yet they still perish.  Why? Do the pills fix the problem? Or do they only cover it up. I, myself, have been without insurance for years. Would you care to know how many times I've been sick? Or would you rather know how often and well I choose to care for my body to avoid getting sick?

The Patch

"Out of sight. Out of mind" is the foundation that the patch as created for us. 'Lo we do hide our reality seeking eyes from the truth and seduce it with all sorts of other trinkets to mask what is ailing us so.

Does this honest do anything for us? Do we really forget our real issues when we throw a patch over it? Or do we make matters worse and merely throw it at the back of our minds to fester while it exacerbates our real issue?

The PROBLEM

The more perceptive of you have already figured it out and some of the more knowledgeable people already knew this, but here is the root of all ailments. The very stem of all that plagues us.

The problem is your choices and your lifestyle.

Your weight,  poor health, low finances,  low self esteem and lack of confidence comes from an unhealthy combination of bad choices of unpleasant lifestyles.

You cannot outrun, nor can you ignore it. Whatever pill you take, it's like a weed. Pull one, more grow.

Whatever patch you try to use to cover it; it's only a matter of time before it returns.

We are given free will to decide how we will live and what we will live with.

Nothing is permanent

Everything can change

Make the choice to change your lifestyle for the better, and the returns will be good, if not better than what you've expected.

When Did We Become Copies?

There was a time during my upbringing when the undeniable desires to achieve more and believe in yourself resonated within me like the vibration of the bell above the church during Sunday service.

Now days I see that this chime has faded into the remedial and consistent 6am alarm that I hate.

Not only do I hate it , I resent it.

I resent it because it is a constant reminder of the entrepreneurial spirit is being ignored and was sold out for the overrated suit and slack combination that screams "Corporate Slaves".

When did I become a carbon copy of the failures I've subjected myself to?

When did I forget my own capabilities and ambitions?

There's NO reason we should follow the deathnail that seals our fates into a mediocre conforming coffin

There is absolutely NO reason why we should feel stuck in a rut and accept less

And there is no reason why we can't change things for the better.

Nothing is permanent

Everything can change

Once you start , all it takes is time and effort to fulfilment.

Square Pegs and Round Holes

The regressive progess I've made in this new journey is coming to an end shortly, and in this lengthy dawning of my minds once darkened set over the plains of corporate America,  I emplore you: come see as I've just seen

It is none too intriguing,  this horrible sedation of my being is constantly pinched between a penny and a planner. Astounding to myself,

"How could I endure this redundancy in this timely manner?"

No , not for me this prision is to be. But for the ones walking everlasting in Limbo , does this office hold their necks by the noose

I've merely experienced the situation for a month and here I begin to see and feel the advert effects on my being. My body has become sedentary, weakened as pains of static aches extend their bitter hands through out my spine and needle my nerves till they're intertwined

My soul is left scarce, dry and void of any viable source of humanity.  No single beat of my once lively body can't be felt in this numbing state of conformity that has bled my individuality dry and killed the spirit within to better my life

Yet ... now , the tides of change have risen high. The corporate collar is to be broken and I will run free

We are PEOPLE!

Not confused and conforming carcasses to bid the will of the corporate machine

to struggle to feed our loved ones with the pressure of the corporate thumb pressing down harder and harder on our bodies to just end in the same position as the rich and weathly

If we are to die the same; so shall we choose to live the same.

I will not be contained

I will not be denied

I'm free

I am alive.

Inside vs Outside; what you can't see will kill you

The age old expression,

"Never judge a book by its cover"

Carries more water in relevance to life than I had once thought. As a fitness expert;  I am often amazed at peoples responses to taking action in assuring their personal health is up to par and their results are flourishing.  While I deeply enjoy the success of my clients, I also am burdened by some of their ignorance.

You see some people think just because they are a certain weight or a certain dress size that they're healthy.  A lot of times that will be the affirming motivation for them to make a change and I understand that. There was once a time when I wore a size 54" waist jean/shorts and XXXL shirts and it crushed me every time I looked in the mirror. Although that was bad, it wasn't as bad as some doctor telling me that at 13 years old I was already on a bad path with my health. Bad weight, pre-hypertensive and on the verge of diabetes.  Throw all that together and you have COUNTLESS reasons to exercise and ZERO excuses.

When I hear someone talk about their weight/size in such a manner that it seems relevant to their personal health, I shake my head every single time. Sure, the outter shell can tell a lot about your work ethic regarding your fitness, but what does the inside have to say?

Do you think Hypertension doesn't exist if you fit in a size 2 ladies?

Do you think diabetes gives a damn about you being able to fit in a L shirt guys?

Do you think high cholesterol cares about you being able to bench press 300lbs?

I'll give you a hint

It doesn't

Looking amazing in clothes and being able to lift some heavy weight is only PART of what it is to be healthy.

It's also about getting your inside in check as well as your outside. There is no set weight or clothes size that reflects what is healthy and what isn't.

Don't worry about the weight you have, only the weight you've lost.

Don't worry about the size you are, only focus on the inches you've dropped

And don't put all your faith in what the mirror shows you, because it is what you cannot see that can kill you.

Get a check up with your doctor every 6 months - 1 year and make sure your vitals are in check.

Diabetes

Hypertension

Cholesterol

And the list goes on.

Effort Yields Results

It has been OBVIOUS. Painfully obviously that everyone wants all the result without putting in the effort. They want to "Get fit quick" way or the magic diet or pill to bring their body to greatness and avoid all the work.

That's the problem, people don't want to work for it anymore. It's not entirely the fault of their ignorance; other sources are to blame.

The advertising companies who have the nerve to say"This person lost all this weight with Jenny Craig and you can too"When they know DAMN well that person had a personal trainer, worked out 5-6 days a week for a few hours at a time and ate right ALL the time.

It's the fault of the companies who make such things as: BowFlex, Ab Ripper, The Shakeweight & The Perfect Push-up that are seriously trying to get the ignorant masses to believe you can get a perfect sculpted body by doing "Perfect Pushups".

It's those weight loss remedies who claim you can lose up to 20lbs in a month taking this pill when their models have either been airbrushed or had liposuction/gastric bypass.

Get the hell out of here with that nonsense!

The only true method of gaining is WORK. Work day in and day out, put in your time and you get exactly what you gave. Dont half-ass your input and run your mouth complaining and whining about the outcome when you know damn well you skipped workouts, you ate garbage and you didn't do your cardio.

Now if you're happy being fat, depressed, unhealthy, ugly, weak, pitiful or all the above then more power to you

But ....

If you aren't satisfied then it's time to shut the hell up and get your self to the gym and get satisfied!

Reality Check

You know what kills me more than anything in my career field? It's not when I see someone having a hard time with their goals, or when someone gets discouraged. It's when someone gives up completely.

When you give up completely all you are doing is saying, " I can't do this " or the following:

"I don't want to lose 20lbs anymore"

"I am okay with being fat"

"I'm okay with not being able to physically help myself if I need to"

"I don't care about myself"

All of these and more are exactly what you're saying when you say "I can't do this" or "I don't want to workout" and in lieu of this, you consciously or subconsciously find a way to make an effort on a far smaller scale.

You immediately go to the latest workout fad, buy P90X, go to Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers and at the end of the day, it still didn't work?

Why is that?  Because not only did you try to take the easy way out of the hard work you need to put in but you also went to some "Lose weight fast" scheme thinking it would do all the work for you.

The result isn't in the method or in the venue;  it's in the work ethic and the work ethic alone.

Your excuses will only keep you fat:

All of your lame excuses for not working out are doing nothing but keeping you fat and ugly. You have not a single excuse that justifies your lack of dedication to your personal health and fitness. You have time. You have the money. You have the ability. You choose not to do it and waste your money on other means of short term satisfaction and still wonder why your clothes are tight and why you look the way you do.

If your friends aren't helping you; they're hurting you:

If your friends aren't encouraging you to take a look at yourselr in the mirror and do something about yourself then you need new friends because if they aren't encouraging you; they are only keeping you down.

Oh, you got problems?

That sounds familiar, but we all have problems and while you may not be able to solve them all right now; I guarantee working out will relieve some of that stress and keep other problems from forming! Like:

Weight Gain

High blood pressure

High cholesterol

Poor sex drive

Depression

And the list goes on.

If you still look cute after your workout,  you aren't done yet!!

If you aren't covered in sweat and on cloud 9 by the time your workout is done then I'm sorry to say but you have WAY more work to do. There is nothing "cute" about working out. You'll grunt, you'll sweat,  you'll smell and you'll feel amazing as hell doing it. Those little 20 min walks on the treadmill aren't going to cut it unless you're there to kill time or boredom.

I've seen people completely change their lifes by changing their bodies and I've seen them throw it all away due to their worthless excuses and lack of support and guess what;  they're right back where they started if not worse. Don't be that person. Don't waste your time and your money. If you're going to whine and cry , that's fine but you still need to work out and push yourself.

Self Help Symposium

The quote above comes from the man himself,  Bruce Lee. A person fitness advocate , a prime example and a strong believer in the philosophy of what is Self Help.

Forged by real life experience and fueled by hardships, he became the symbol of Health and Fitness in balance and harmony. What this quote means is relevant to us all and I want you to soak in what this means.

To me, this means that the only one that can help us through anything is ourselves.  No outside help can change the most significant thing in our own personal lifes. That is the content of our character.

We all know at least one person whom have had everything and all the help one you could possibly think of but still couldn't help themselves.

No amount of extra money could save them from debt. No amount of help could save them from their own personal demons.

In fact,  all it could do was merely prolong the inevitable.

I am no stranger to seeking outside help or opinion; it is in our nature to seek aid and that's perfectly fine..

However, as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it.

So look inside yourself as I ask this simple question: "Are you happy?"

If you are, then continue being happy.

If you aren't;  then do something about it.

Don't wait for something to happen because nothing's coming your way. YOU have to go and make it happen. Dont wait for things to change, because they won't on their own. Only YOU can make them change.

Happiness or Success?

Happiness and Success .... two contrasting and complimenting aspects to which we base our very life upon. But what is happiness compared to success? Can it be,"Happily Successful" or should it be,"Successfully Happy"?

Though it is relevant to us as individuals,  we meet at common grounds of desire and determination to achieve what we see as "happiness" . Whether it's Money, Love or Goals.

This reminds me of the story of the wise man and the western man. Both met at a temple to discuss life and all its meaning. As the westerner sat and talked to the wise man about life, he served tea to them both. The more the westerner spoke to the wise man, the more he kept filling his tea cup. As the tea began to overflow then westerner said, " My cup is full sir". The wise man stopped and said

"One cannot intake if one is already full"

The westerner quickly realized that he traveled all this way to learn, yet he had been speaking the whole time.

As Buddha says,  get rid of ego and rid yourself of desire, and one is only left with the truth.

As a society, we know no satisfaction. Our cups are void of any structure to fill. As we progress,  we constantly want and desire more of it until, inevitably our obtained become meaningless.

Now remember, I'm speaking about happiness;  not success. Because they both are relevant to you; they remain irrelevant to eachother.

Once you let go of desire and let go of ego; you have the truth of what happiness can be.

The Las Vegas Informer Exclusive: Sherry B. Hasty Rise to Success

Sherry can be defined as many different things but the one thing that would be able to cover them all is, “Successful”. A 40 year YOUNG full time traveling RN, a mother and an amateur bikini competitor who was born in San Antonio, TX and graduated from Angelo State University in ’99. Sherry was in her 20’s, she would go to the gym and do what I would call a “casual” workout. It wasn’t until she turned 40 when things had started to change. A coworker of hers underwent a gallbladder surgery due to a horrible diet and that’s what did it. Sherry joined a gym, got a trainer and started getting after it. She attended her first show with my neighbor and then knew she wanted to try her hand at competition.
She quickly cleaned up her diet and in 12 weeks she her 6 pack and that’s very usual for a woman in her 40’s so this was, obviously, a huge deal for her.  After that, she knew she was going to go for Bikini competition and see what she can do. Sherry placed 3rd and that qualified me for nationals in her first show. From then on she was placing differently through each show due to competing back to back, and then things started taking a toll on her body. She then decided to take a break for a year and placed 1st on her first show back and this just reignited her passion to compete. Sherry was then featured in Max Muscle Magazine in September 2011. Sherry now works as a full time traveling nurse, a part time model for HTFU and a part time office assistant for HTFU LLC.

We were lucky enough to catch Sherry with a little free time and she sat down with us and indulged us in the life of a woman her personifies and radiates the HTFU mindset and lifestyle.

LVI: What’s does HTFU means to you?
SBH: HTFU to me means absolutely everything. I’ve been on my own since I was 17 and I had to grow up very fast. Basically I had to “HTFU”

LVI: Sherry, give us an idea of what your weight training routine is and how you get psyched for a workout
SBH: My routines normally include 2 hours a day .My legs are my weak point of my body so I workout legs 3-4x a week. Squats, Lunges, Dead lifts etc and mix it up with Plyometrics as well. I use a lot of Cellucor products as a staple of my supplement regimen. I do cardio for an hour a day on a stair climber. I’m not a huge fun of cardio but it’s got to be done. My favorite exercise is squats. Least favorite is box jumps. I usually begin my prep 12 weeks out from a show to give me enough time to dial in my diet and cardio to get the desired results.

LVI: What are your thoughts of the growing and changing fitness fad s that are going on now days?
SBH:  I am pretty old school when it comes to my training. I don’t fluctuate a lot with my weight so this keeps my contest prep slightly less stressful on my body. I prefer to do it that way because us women cannot pull and drop weight that easy. I eat clean a lot throughout the week and occasionally on the weekends I’ll have one cheat meal or so. There are a lot of different fitness fads and diet going around and the problem with that is a lot of people want something instantaneous and quick. They’ll buy whatever they think will work and don’t do a lot of research to know what they’re getting themselves into. Everyone’s body is different and what works for someone may/may not work well for you

LVI: Sherry what are your thoughts on Personal Trainers, good or no good?
SBH: It is definitely something that has blown me away lately. I remember going into 24 Fitness and the trainers, staff and managers would be in great shape and would look great. Now, I walk in and see unfit trainers, big staff members and it looks like all of these people who work in a gym look like they don’t even workout! I don’t understand when it became okay for people who look like they don’t know what they’re doing or how to do it and try to tell someone else how to work out and how to lose weight!

LVI: What’s your favorite cheat meal?
SBH: Pizza, pancakes and breakfast tacos!!! You can have a cheat meal! It’s not going to hurt you that bad, but you have to earn it with a week of dedication and commitment and it’s all in moderation.

Look for Sherry in Chicago for the Junior Nationals on June 13th, 2013 to earn her pro card and begin to make this goal of hers a reality. Sherry and HTFU are going to Isle of Man TT to do some sponsorship work with athlete Brandon Cretu in the races.

The Process

I once wrote of a segment that I called "Trust The Process" and I want to explain to you what I mean when I say that. Life has a process in which things breakdown, go wrong or fall apart and then they're built back up again. Much like our muscle tissue when we workout.

We go through a process of constant break down and build up over and over again to achieve a goal, in this case our dream physique.

However, in life, while have the exact same process, there is a difference because there are two types of people in this world. There are those of us who take this process headon. We shift and progress through all the pain, the bullshit and the doubt because have faith in ourselves and that all of our effort will not have been in vain.

When it is all said and done and it's all over; we are met with great rewards for our struggles and further our journey to even better rewards.

Then there are those of us who do the exact opposite. We carry on until we hit turmoil and the second we do; we regress. We regress over and over again until we are no better off than where we were when we first started our journey through life.

I, myself, cannot settle of an average being. I cannot settle for average anything. I want great EVERYTHING.  No matter how bad things get, no matter how hard life hits you MUST, yes MUST, keep getting up and keep pushing forward.

Life isn't easy! You know this!

Times are gonna be hard, money is going to be tight and things aren't always going to workout but if you keep going and you don't quit I promise you your reward is on its way. I GUARANTEE you that all of your work will pay off dearly because that's the process.

Each and every one of you have done so much in your time and have accomplished a lot,  and all I want for each and every one of you to have more and more success.  Trust the process because it's the way life works. Keep your mindset right , your work ethic high and stay ahead of that curve because if you do, I promise you have the greatest life imaginable.

All you have to do is decide to do it. Take that love you have and all that passion you have ans spread it into all areas of your life and watch the seeds of all your labor bring a fruitful harvest for you and your loved one's to enjoy forever.

Happy Training.

Success Never Sleeps

Have you heard the term, " Success Never Sleeps "? Do you know what that really means?

There are so many different ways to explain this concept that so many people just don't understand, but I find it easier understanding why they DON'T instead of why they DO. Truth be told, people are lazy. We live in an entitlement rich society where we are giving awards for, "Just showing up" and that completely de-values the reward of hard work and dedication. Thus the majority people that if they just show up, they will get what they want.

When I was growing up, I was taught then when you work hard, consistently pursue and never give up that great things come your way and if you don't then you have no one to blame for the lack of your own personal success but yourself. Now, I see nothing but people expecting all the work to be done overnight or in an instant once they make the decision of what they want.

I can't count how many times I've had the luxury to work with some amazing clients and they get a month in of solid training and they decide they will try it on their own and see what happens or they want to "Maintain". It , for the most part, ALWAYS ends the same. All the weight that was once lost, is put back on and then some. All the strides that were made and all the obstacles that were overcome come back swinging on all cylinders and it goes back to square one.

Here is the truth, there is no such thing as maintaining. Once you accept the idea of maintaining, then you accept the idea of it's okay to gain a little weight because you can lose it fast, right?

Think of it this way: Two people set different goals to achieve. One person sets a goal to lose 10 lbs and be able to run 2 miles with some ease and the other sets a goal to lose 25 lbs and run 3 miles with ease. Both have a time from of 3 months to achieve these goals. Now, lets say they come up short. This person only lost 5 lbs instead of 10 and can't run 2 miles with ease and the other looses 20 lbs and can only run 2 miles with ease. Now, which fall short will be harder? Would you feel worse if you lost 5 lbs instead of 10? or 20 lbs instead of 25?

The thing is, if you don't completely overcompensate to achieve your goals, you will come up shy because you will have obstacles over obstacles over obstacles and they will never quit coming. In fact, the only thing that will voluntarily or involuntarily quit is YOU.

Success is a lifestyle and it never ever sleeps and it never ever quits. Of course life happens, but it's all up to you to choose to be bigger than your opposition. No one will do it for you and no one can stop you.

Training Personalised

In my extent experience as a Fitness Expert and my personal experience in the fitness way of being I've come across many different people who all come to the gym for many different reasons. Some come for vanity while others are more concerned with their longevity.

Whether you're at the gym for a good reason or not there will only be ONE factor that'll determine whether or not you achieve this goal whatever the said goal is and it's simply this:

"Do I know what the hell I'm doing?"

Ask yourself this very important question and it's not important because it's the sole reason for your goals to be succeeded or not, but it's the constant concern of safety! If you don't know what you're doing you stand a HUGE chance of getting hurt and that, to me, is far worse than not achieving your goals as quickly as you want.

So unless you've researched every thing on working out that you possibly could or workout with someone who knows what they're doing, chances are that you're trying to 'Wing" it. I hate to break it to you but you cannot "wing" this lifestyle. Winging it here leads to herniated discs, torn rotator cuffs and lifetime injuries.

Many fitness enthusiasts and supporters say to hire a trainer. Even if it's to properly learn form. It's worth the investment and it truely is.

One thing so many people have the misconception of is that personal training is a "luxury" or that only rich people can afford personal trainers.

Luxuries are NOT investments in your health and well-being. Luxuries are frivolous spending on commodities you don't need and serve no other purpose than simply to have and that's it. This investment is for everyone who's ready to commit to a healthier and better life.

So when you're out shopping for clothes you don't need, shoes you don't wear, fine dining on things that make you fat and picking up the tab at the bar for drinks that poison you, take a look in the mirror. If you can honestly say you're happy with what's looking back at you, then by all means have your food, your drink and enjoy your clothes.
If you don't like what's looking back at you then I'd say it's time to make the commitment to a better you. I'm not saying that you'll need a personal trainer for life and I'm not saying you cannot do it on your own. I'm simply saying that for all the money you spend on your commodities;  you could use that money to invest in a healthier,  happier and hotter you.

At the end of the day, we have no one to blame but ourselves for our shortcomings. Whether they may be hereditary or not, it's still no excuse to not do anything about it

What's Your Investment?

Many of times I have constantly referred to Personal Training as an investment and while having a conversation with a friend, I think u have found a way to relate to you what I mean when I'm talking about investments.

We all have lived in an apt at one time or another and we all know what goes into it. Desposits, Fees , and Rent. We stay for however long the lease may be and we are done. What's our return from all this money we spent?   Not even a full deposit at times and even MORE fees to pay. Now those of you who own a house, know the process. Same thing almost. The difference is the return or what your money has done for you. The keyword we are looking for here Profit and some of us make an awesome profit from investing in a house, am I right?

Now many of the optimists will say, "well there is a return either way and besides, apartments are cheaper than houses." They are correct. They are cheaper in the short term but let's be honest about "Short Term". It doesn't last. How many of you had to buy something because you needed it right then and there and you ended up having to buy something similar or the same thing because something for "Short term" didn't work?

Now, what does this have to do with your health and wellness?  Everything. We know all about short term. We age. We get slower, weaker, fatter and things get harder. I bet there was once a time when some of you could eat whatever you want and not gain a single pound. Now, if you even look at a cupcake you gain 5lbs. I am also willing to bet some of you could spend a week in the gym,  drop 15lbs and be good for a month or so. In short, the short term is only good for the short term.

Personal Training and exercise alone for that matter is about the Long term. It's a constant invest and reinvest in yourself and your own well being. Let's be honest about it.  That bootcamp you once did or that diet you tried for a while, it didn't work and it's because you have to constantly reinvest in it for that return.  Sure, we won't be getting money on this return,  but here is what you'll get:

Longer life
Better life
Stronger
Faster
Better looking
Better mood
Longer lasting body
Better sex
Look better in everything
Your body will work more efficiently

Not to mention you'll be a walking inspiration for others. A mobile billboard for what happens when you invest in yourself.

Get fit quick schemes,  fad diets and your once or twice a month trip to the gym isn't going to cut it.  That's the Apt you're living in. Commitment to your diet, your workouts and yourself is the home you raise your children in.

Choppin' At The Bit

Allow me to introduce you to the man, whom in my opinion, is one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.  His name is Rocco Francis Marchegiano  aka Rocky Marciano. He is the only heavyweight to go undefeated and untied in his professional career and was knocked down only once by the man in the picture. That man, obviously paid dearly for that, is named Jersey Joe Walcott

So why Rocky? What makes him the greatest? Why did he go undefeated and untied? Two words my friends:

Training

Determination

I'll break them down for you like this. Rocky was an avid Joe Louis fan and if you dont know Joe Louis is then I feel bad for you. Rockys mentality was, "if I train twice as hard as the champ, then I can beat the champ."

This simple mental state is was propelled him to an illustrious career in boxing. He ran twice as far as the champ, boxex twice as many rounds as him as well. He believed to be the best, you gotta train to beat the best. Rumour has it that he had a hard time keeping sparring partners.  Another one states he had a custom made 250lbs heavy bag that he would intentionally try to swing with the impact from his punches. If it wouldn't swing, he'd train harder. If it did swing, he wanted it to swing a lot or he'd train harder.

Determination, a set goal in mind to inspire and propel himself beyond his own comprehensible capability as a fighter. We all have our reasons for the hustle, his was his family.

His father worked in Brockton making shoes for a living, and it killed Rocky.  He knew he didn't want to make shoes for a living and he damn sure didn't want his father in the factory anymore. His determination to take care of his parents and get out of Brockton only fueled his training and elevated him to that championship level.

Now what can we take away from this? That it doesn't matter who you are, what you're doing, or where you came from. With determination and hard work, ANYTHING can happen. Absolutely anything. All it takes are those first few steps through all the BS, Negativity and Doubt to get to your promise land. Don't think for a second that anyone who was ever great never had a doubt before, because they have.

Rocky did after he killed a fellow Italian fighter in the ring. Almost gave up boxing, gave up the dream and almost went to work in that same factory his father worked. He didn't.  He became bigger than the situation and he continued on. He's only human, just as we are.

If he can ... if I can ... you can.

Things Just Happen?

In my experience as a personal trainer, it has become more and more apparent to me that people love to NOT take responsibility for their own actions. It seems they always have an excuse for their poor health, lack of fitness and obesity. I've heard it all.

"Everyone in my family is fat so it must be genetics. I'm big boned"

Genetics play a insignificant roll in your choice to get off your ass and do something about your weight. No, not go on a diet or go buy P90X and use it for a few days. More like CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE.

"I'm too busy"

You're too busy for your health? Are you to busy too watch TV? Are you too busy too go out drinking? Are you too busy to go out shopping?  No? Then no, you're not busy. You have a case of bad time management mixed with a bit of lazy. Schedule it! Give yourself anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours a day for a week to make something happen.

"I've tried working out and it didn't work."

Really? Working out doesn't work? So all of those people you see at the gym that are slowly molding and forming the body that YOU want, they're wasting their time because working out doesn't work? Honestly, how hard did you try? Or were you going through the motions without really testing yourself?

Truth hurts, but I am essentially a " No BS " trainer. Your hard earned money and precious time is valuable and doesn't deserve "beating out the bush" rhetoric. Believe me when I say that things don't just happen. You aren't unhealthy, "just because." There is a reason for everything and there is a very specific reason why you are where you are now. Despite the reason, you have to remember that there is nothing that can stop you from having the body you want, looking as good as you want or achieving the goals you've set out to accomplish  but your own attitude. Think about it.

Having Your Cake and Eating It

"To me, having your cake and eating is too is being healthy and fit enough to eat it without suffering the consequences that come with eating it." - SeanB

To the untrained mind, this could easily be misconstrued as,

"if I workout, I can eat whatever I want."

No, that's false. You can't and you'll NEVER be able to out train a bad diet.
What this means is, the people who "get it" can eat the cake and still have the cake because:

1. They earned their cheat day by putting hours in the gym with weights and cardio while keeping a clean diet during it

2. Because they know what will happen if their eating gets out of control. They understand the consequences of "letting yourself go"

People don't understand that being healthy, being active or being fit isn't a fad and it damn sure isn't a phase of life. It's a complete lifestyle. It's a lot more than being in the gym, eating with common sense,  or investing in your body. To be healthy and fit is to achieve a balance in your life that juggles your "needs and wants" of your physical being.

For example, we NEED to have a strong body forged by weight training for the sake of a strong immune system, stronger bones and a higher capability

We WANT to have a strong body because muscle tone and muscle, in general, is sexy. It's a physical power that screams confidence and capability and we all want it. Women want to look fit and good in anything they wear, as do men.

We NEED to have a strong heart benefited from cardiovascular exercise for the sake of our longevity and our personal safety

We WANT that strong heart so we don't have to worry about high cholesterol, early stroke or bad sex. We want that so we aren't embarrassed because we walked up a single flight of stairs and we're gasping for air while others around us are a hair away from calling EMS because they think we are going to pass out.

So what is to have your cake and eat it too? Well, I'll put it to you like this: having your cake and eating it too is taking pride in your body, both inside and out, and molding it into a sexy and strong physique while being able to indulge in that delicacy once a week and not worrying about it because, come Monday, you're back on the daily grind.  Day in and day out and during it, looking better and better and getting stronger and stronger as the weeks go by. We can have that cake because we EARNED that damn cake.

Workout in Studio 222

So I had a chance to get a pad session in with James Wong of Studio222 out in Las Vegas, NV  Needless to say , I got served.

However, I will say that any form of full body cardiovascular exercise (Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Etc) is extremely beneficial to anyone's fitness goals. I strongly recommend getting a class, checking out a gym that specifies in that field, or getting a one on one session with a coach. It's an awesome way to relieve stress and test your fitness level.

I also did an interview with James after the workout, I've included it below.

Anyone who has kept up with the sport of MMA within the last 10 years knows this brand by heart; Fairtex.  Fairtex is a Muay Thai equipment company that started in a back alley warehouse in San Francisco, California. James Wong helped start off Fairtex, create by Alex Gong, and helped bring it all the way to Vegas. Now, James owns Studio222 off Flamingo Rd. in Las Vegas, NV and is still practicing the true meaning behind the Muay Thai sport and displaying it through his energy, his life and his passion to make a difference. The Las Vegas Informer had a chance to talk to Sean about his experience with James and how it has made a difference in his life.

LVI: Tell us about James and how we made an impact on your professional life.
SB: When I first met James I was a student at PFI who took a tour of his studio and listened to his story. He had a lot of struggle as he did success. That’s what made him more significant. A lot of professionals don’t speak of their struggles as passionately as their success. James knows that his struggle in life plays just as an important role, if not the most important role, in determining how successful he will become. I saw this and I knew immediately to listen to everything he says. After I decided to start my own thing in San Antone, I kept in contact with James and made it a point to pick his brain every chance I could. His insight was virtually priceless.

LVI: Why did you choose James to interview for the Las Vegas Informer?

SB: As I said, James’ way of thinking is something I cannot find in many different leaders and business owners anywhere I've looked or been. He understands that things happen for a reason and that you must give up something good to get to great. His energy displays that and you can hear the passion in his voice when he speaks. I feel people need to be reminded of what leader of his caliber sounds like.  Along with that, he has some awesome stuff happening in Vegas and I thought it would make for a good interview piece

LVI:  Before this, have you ever trained in Muay Thai?

SB: I never have. This workout kicked my butt big time. I have trained in boxing before and, like every kid, took karate and Tae Kwan Do when I was younger but nothing on this level. Muay Thai brings whole body along with knees and elbows into play. The kicks take time to get the technique down and the movement will wear you out a lot quicker when you’re expected to move and hit simultaneously. I will say after I was finished that I was sore for days. It shows me where my weaknesses are and where I need to improve.

James Wong and Studio222 have been serving Vegas since 2008 and is still going strong. He makes it a point to keep it environmentally friendly and effective for his clientele. He can be located at 8645 W. Flamingo Rd #104 and can be reached via Email at James@Studio222@lasvegas.com

Where's Your Investment?

I want to ask all of you who are reading this a question.

" what is the one thing you're investing in that is benefiting you on a daily basis?"

What are you doing with your time and hard earned money? Are you saving it for a rainy day? Putting it in retirement? Putting it towards your health and wellbeing?  Or are you wasting it?

Yes, WASTING it. Are you buying clothes that you look horrible in because your stomach is hanging over or out? Eating out constantly and just adding the weight by the week? Buying cars or jewelry or designer handbags? What is all of that going to do for you? Your Dr sure isn't going to care what you have materially when he tells you that your borderline diabetic or on the way to an early death. Your family and friends sure as hell don't care about the car you drive or the clothes you wear when you look like a slob or if you're in bad health either.

Investing in your personal health and daily well being is an investment that pays off daily and It makes everything better. It makes your clothes look at dit better,  your body better in every way, and it even helps your self confidence improve on a daily basis. My question is, " why wouldn't you invest in yourself daily?"

Trust me, if you're spending your cash on wasted nights in the bar, clothes that you don't look good in because you're fat or cars or commodities that try to compensate for your lack of self confidence, you're not fooling anyone. Just yourself.

It literally SICKENS me to see unhealthy people blows hundreds of dollars on material possession and barely a few dollars on their health and fitness and complain how they don't like being fat or losing weight is hard. It's all about priorities and if you don't want to be fat, unhealthy or ugly anymore, it's time to check your priorities and set them straight. No one's going to do it for you but there are people to help you.

Take all that money you waste on going out to eat bad food, buying clothes, shoes, handbags, iPods, etc and invest in :

A health coach

A nutritionist

A personal trainer

A bootcamp

Any of the above will make a difference that will bring a sense of satisfaction that no purse, car or piece of clothing will bring to you.

Don't Like to Exercise?

So you don't like to exercise? Do you like being fat? Do you like being unhealthy? How would you like to walk into your Drs office in a year or two and him tell you that if you don't start taking care of your body, that things will only get worse and you have a risk of dying early?

Don't get me wrong, I know what it's like to be fat. I was damn near 300 lbs when I was between 12-13 years old and I was only 5"5' and some change. That was one of the harshest times of my life. All I could look forward to was the next fat joke at my expense. I CHOSE to make a change for the better and if a kid can tell what's best for him in the long run, then I don't know what you're waiting for. You don't have an excuse big enough to overshadow what's really important; your health

So took a look in the mirror and ask yourself if you like what you see. No? Then do something about it. I'm not saying going kill yourself for hours in the gym and eat like a rabbit.  I'm asking you to take some pride in your health, how you look and how your body performs. It's the only one you get and, financially speaking, it's a lot cheaper to maintain then repair. Think about it.

Eating and Stress

This is some of that harsh reality that you need to realize as soon as possible. I know life is stressful. Hell, everybody does. Be that as it may, you do NOT need to make things worse for yourself in the long run by ruining it with some immediate satisfaction.

You save your cheat meals for your cheat DAY and leave it at that. There is nothing more self destructive than putting something in your mouth that is going to kill your long-term fitness goals because you had a bad day. You harden up and you bulldoze through all that BS and save it for that one day a week that you EARN. I say earn because if you aren't working your ass off 6 days a week and you aren't putting in your time, you don't deserve a cheat day because you didn't earn it.

Remember, this doesn't come easy and it doesn't come fast. If you want it, you need to work for it. Either work your ass off and do the best you possibly can or don't and stay fat. It's all up to you.

Change

Look what has to happen before someone will take the initiative to change their ways.  People have become so ignorant of their own well being, they won't accept responsibility for their own degenerative actions.

We eat with no common sense and don't take care of our bodies until a Dr tells us if we don't do something, we're going to die early.

Why? Why do we wait until it's to late or when our only hope lies within surgeries that do more harm to us than good?

If you don't like something about your life, change it. Don't like your body? Change how you treat it. No one can help you unless YOU are ready to change.

There is no better time to start than NOW

There is absolutely NO excuse for you not to start now.

You CAN Have To Much of a Good Thing

That age old tale of having too much of a good thing is bad couldn’t be any further from the truth, when referring to ones diet that is. People tend to focus so much attention on what they are eating and they tend to forget how much of it they are eating. Portion sizing is a key strategy to lose a good amount of weight and it is a fairly simple strategy. I will show you how to make it work for you.

Would you like to know the reason why people praise the Weight Watchers premade frozen meals? Because of its portion sizes, that is it’s key to success. The calorie count is precise and can make a difference in your physique, even thought you may not be eating the best things available to you. How is it possible to eat processed foods but still lose weight? The answer is still,”Portion Size.”  So this could, in fact, be beneficial strategy if you tend to lack discipline to keep your portion sizes in check. Also, don’t think for a second that you can eat whatever you want after you eat something that says “healthy” on the box. This applies to frozen healthy foods or whole foods.

Another way to keep your portion sizes in check goes as follows:
·         When going out to eat, ask for a box from the waiter/waitress when ordering to box and bag up half of the food on your plate and get it out of sight. “Out of sight. Out of mind.”
·         When cooking at home, if you’re unsure about what portion size you should use and lack a food scale to measure, cut the amount of food you eat in half. Base it off of your past and go from there. This way it will be better to be safe with the portion than sorry you ate too much.
·         As said before, if you don’t have a scale for your food and measuring cups, buy them. Some scales now days can even tell you how much Carbs/Protein/Fat/Calories are in whatever you are measuring.
·         Splitting plates when going out to eat is an easier way to keep portions down and save money as well.
·         Purchasing plastic containers and spreading out meals in separate containers is an easy way to not only keep track of meals, but keep the portions in check as well.

Amongst many other strategies, the main idea is that you do not allow yourself to lose control of the diet. Diet is 80% of the game and it is important. Remember, just because it is important doesn’t mean dieting has to be hard. If you work hard, diet hard and keep focused, you still get your one day when you can go all out with your food. I am willing to bet once your diet goes from being a choice to a lifestyle; it will be much easier to stick to. Not to mention when you see what results it yields, you will want to skip a cheat day or two.

Quality or Quantity?

I want to propose a question to all of you. If you spent hours upon hours of your life trying to make enough money to be able to retire comfortably, would you waste it on something other than what you had intended it for? Would you spend all that money on lottery tickets instead of putting it towards your main goal? I think we all know the answer to the question. So now that you answered that, let me ask you this, “ Why would you eat food that you know is bad for you , when you say you’re trying to do everything you can to lose weight?”
Far too many times during my career as a personal trainer in corporate fitness would I see someone who spent an hour on the treadmill, an hour in the weight room, or in and out of many group classes and I see that exact same person driving straight to a McDonalds or a Jack in the Box on my way home. The only thing I can honestly think to myself is,” What are you doing?!?!”  When I ask people why they tend to do that, they always come back with the same response. “I earned it. I did my hour of cardio so I can eat whatever I want.” The truth of the matter is that after all that hard work and time spent on building up that foundation you are trying to get, you’ve just broke it down to pieces with that McDonalds or Jack in the Box. Please take note that it takes a lot more than a single workout in one day to earn the food you really want. In fact, it takes numerous workouts over many days to be able to say you’ve earned that cheat meal. Drasin and the guys from the 70’s followed a strict diet 6 days out of the week and had that one day where they ate anything and everything they wanted when they wanted. Of course, they were also working out twice a day.
There are many different ways to overcome this diet trouble. Here are a few things you can try to keep yourself more consistent on your diet than you are now:
1.       Train hard and eat clean 6 days out of the week and use that 7th day to eat anything you want
2.       Train more than once a day to increase calorie expenditure throughout the day. The best way to do this is to develop a split of some kind. Upper Body in the AM and Lower Body in the PM, Check in the morning and then Back later at night. This is a good way to make some gains, increase calorie use and be able to slip by with cheating on your diet every now and then.  * On a side note, if you decide to do this, keep your workouts at an hour or a little more. That includes: Warm up, weight training, cardio, abs. anything more than that, your Cortisol will rise and that won’t help either.
3.       Get a bite of something you are craving to tie you over. 1 small bite to satisfy that beast and keep going on with your diet.
These are a few things you can try to keep you going. Don’t forget, diet is 80% of the whole game. Sure, weight training, cardio and supplementation help, but the diet is every single hour of every single day. If your diet is spot on, your results will be that much better.

Work Ethic

Now a day’s people seem busier than they have ever been. Whether it is because they’re playing both mom and dad roles, working multiple jobs or have a career with school on top of that. It is amazing to see what we, as people, can handle all at once. Unfortunately, some of us tend to spread ourselves to thin and then something eventually gives. What determines what gives is our priorities. This is a good time for you to think about what you consider a priority while you read.

Work Ethic plays a lot in the role of priorities. Some of us who have it tend to own the day or,” Carpe Diem” if you will. Some of us do the exact opposite. Some like to day dream and wish on a star that something awesome happens and they will go from there. Sadly, they’re wishing and waiting for the rest of their lives. Your work ethic determines a lot about you and how your future is going to look like, no matter what you’re doing at that time. It separates people who have jobs from people who have careers. It rolls over into everything we do. Doing work is what brings the success you want; nothing else. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, what excuse you have for today or what you say. All that matters is the work you put in. You get what you gave. If you gave it your all, you’ll get it all. If you gave nothing, you will get nothing.
What I do want you to realize is that work ethic isn’t something that can be taught or bought. Work ethic is shown by example for your own interpretation alone. We all cannot do or have what everyone has, that is impossible. However, we can interpret our own situations and example however we decide to and go from there. The idea is to take the example, take a page out of it’s’ book and then apply it to your life. Don’t duplicate what someone else did and hope it works, make your own way while using others situations as example to learn how it can benefit you and your life.

I am a big believer that everything that happens to us happens for a reason, whether it is good or bad. People, events, and situations all happen to us for a reason. Whatever the reason is, it is up to us to figure out why it happened and take a lesson away from it.  I believe people come into your life to show you something about yourself. I also believe the situations and events that happen to us, be it good or bad, help show us what we are really made of. That is how our own work ethic is established. We learn from what happened, and it makes us either better or, in some cases, worse than before. That decision is entirely up to you.

Why Not Weights?

When you think weight training, you are most likely picturing Arnold holding up both arms and flexing them or a flashback to a huge bodybuilder that you once saw in a magazine and thought,” Oh my … gross! Why would you want to do that?” I have seen women stray far away from the weight room and often wondered why. I know they want to get in shape and they want a body they can be proud of, but they are skipping a big part of what it takes to help them reach their goals. They know that, right? Truth be told, I know many of women who turn down the weight room for a few of the same reasons. After a while, I’ve boiled it down to about 3 main reasons why women choose to stay out of the weight room.
The first reason would be because there are many myths about weight training that women hear from someone who knew someone who worked with someone who had saw this for his or herself. One of these common hearsay myths is “You will get bulky or look manly if you lift weights.” On the contrary, women lack the amount of testosterone for this to actually happen. I am sure you have seen bulky or “manly” women in magazines or on TV. Rest assured that it takes more than you can imagine making it to that point. Food intake plays a significant role in the amount of size you will get or lose in the gym. It’s not uncommon for people wanting to get “bulky” to eat anywhere from 10,000 – 15,000 calories a day just to maintain, recover and grow. This is obviously an outlandish number that you more than likely make in a full seven day week rather than a single day’s worth of food intake.
Women often choose to skip the weight room is because they don’t completely understand the benefits of weight training.  Resistance training has been shown to be the “Fountain of Youth” by many standards due to its many benefits. The following benefits are:
·         Weight loss – Weight training has shown to fire up the metabolism for longer periods of time than regular cardio sessions. This means you’re burning calories longer than you would by just doing cardio alone. For a massive metabolic boost, do your cardio after your weight training sessions.
·         Immune system Improvement – the body’s immune system gets a hefty boost with weight training due to the fact that your body’s muscle tissue is being torn down and rebuilt. This causes your body to develop a stronger immune system foundation to handle this and keep yourself healthy. For an extra boost, try a L-Glutamine supplement to keep your immune system in excellent condition.
·         Lower Risk of Coronary Artery Disease - Weight training has shown to decrease blood pressure, lower cholesterol, strengthen the heart and help strengthen the immune system. A healthy combination better than any prescription your Dr. will write for you.
·         Strength Gain – the strength gain you will achieve from resistance training is something that can come in handy if you have a family of little ones or if you require lifting on a daily basis. This will also help you if you should ever need to pull yourself up or pick someone else up to help them.
·         Strengthening Bones – Women have a higher risk of osteoporosis and weight training is something they should consider no matter what age. Weight training will build better bone density to fight off osteoporosis. For a little extra, take a Vitamin D and Calcium supplement to aid.
·         Lowering Risk of Injuries – Weight training will keep your body strong enough to keep injuries at bay by building stronger bones, healthy muscle tissue and strong joints.  Bad knees, bad backs and hurting joints will be something you will never have to deal with if you have a consistent workout routine.
Resistance training programs have also done wonders in fighting depression or anxiety while increasing confidence. It’s the only thing you can do consistently that will cure many medical diseases, prevent many more medical diseases and keep your body strong while looking great. There is no pill that will make it happen for you and there is no magic diet out there. There is only you and the gym that will make your goals a reality and also make anything possible for you. All it takes is a little hard work and commitment for some magic to happen.
Think of this, you’re new to working out and you walk into a weight room full of a bunch of guys and maybe a few other ladies. How are you feeling? Scared, Out of place or Insecure? Who wouldn’t? You’re stepping into a new environment and you may not know where to even begin. Everything seems new or complicated at first, but its okay. We all of us have been in your shoes and we know exactly what you’re feeling standing there looking around. The best way to keep this from going bad is to make a plan and go in prepared. I understand it can be uncomfortable working out with a bunch of men around, and if it bothers you or you think it will bother you, bring a girlfriend along for a workout buddy. Some gyms have a workout area specifically for women, so that can be an option as well. Write your goals out and keep them in your line of vision at some point of the day. Tape them to your bathroom mirror so you see it first thing in the morning. That phrase,” Keep your eye on the prize” means everything here. Meet with a fitness expert or an experienced friend to set up a game plan learning the basics of exercise form and how to establish your own personal program. We are all unique as we are the same so not every program is going to work for us. Think of your new workout routine as a dress tailored just for you.
When you are ready, step in the weight room with your best foot forward and make it happen. We are in this together because we all have done it. We know you can do it to. Train hard, eat well and keep pushing until you cross the finish line.
